Can I help Myself?

If you have a boiler breakdown some checks that you may want to make before calling an engineer.

• If you have a combi or system boiler is the pressure low and if so can you top it up to around 1 bar.
• Is there power to the boiler, has the fuse blown.
• Check that the gas has not been turned off.

If you have a plumbing emergency

If you have a burst or serious leak, can you turn off the water supply at the incoming mains stop tap.
If you have a blocked toilet, can you pour a bucket of water down from a meter or so above the toilet.(not a Saniflo). If water is leaking badly, it may be a good idea to turn off the electric to anything that might be affected by the water.

Gas Leak

If you smell gas or think that you may have a gas leak somewhere then you should call National Grid Gas Emergencies (formally Transco Gas) on 0800 111 999 (This is a 24hr emergency line.) Open your windows and doors to let air in, make sure all gas appliances are turned off and turn off the gas at the mains if possible. Do not turn lights on or off and avoid using other electrical switches and appliances as this could trigger an explosion. Do not smoke, light a match or any other naked flame. Do not try to investigate the problem or attempt to fix a leak or faulty appliance.
